Activities of Iran's Arak nuclear reactor to restore soon

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 1

By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The activities of Iran's Arak nuclear reactor can be restored within two months, Spokesman for the Atomic Energy Agency Organization of Iran (AEOI) Behrouz Kamalvandi said at a meeting of the Iranian parliament, Trend reports citing the parliament’s website.

The spokesman noted that however, it was claimed that the reactor was concreted and destroyed.

Kamalvandi added that according to the decision of the Iranian parliament, a total of four months has been set for the restoration of the Arak reactor.

"Iran can install old and new centrifuges in the reactor," he said.

The spokesman stressed that the volume of uranium enriched by Iran amounts to about 3.8 tons, at present. This figure was between 4 and 11 tons before.

Kamalvandi also said that the implementation of the International Atomic Energy Agency's additional protocol on Iran's nuclear program does not pose any problems for Iran's uranium enrichment process.

However, the non-implementation of this protocol may raise some doubts about Iran's nuclear program, according to him.

Today on Dec. 1, the Iranian parliament approved a strategic action plan to lift sanctions against Iran and protect the interests of the Iranian people.

According to the plan, the AEOI must enrich and store 120 kilograms of 20-percent uranium annually. At the same time, the organization must place a minimum of 1,000 IR-2m centrifuges at the Natanz Nuclear Facility within 3 months.
