BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 13. Two new nuclear power plants are expected to be commissioned during Iran's next government (from August 2025 through August 2029), Iranian Vice President and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Organization Mohammad Eslami told reporters after the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, Trend reports.
According to Eslami, the building of each nuclear power plant
takes at least seven years. Meanwhile, in Iran, development of
additional nuclear power reactors began last year and this
year.
Eslami stated that the combined power output capacity of both
facilities will be 1,000 megawatt-hours.
Iran's vice president announced that the Bushehr Nuclear Power
Plant, the country's sole nuclear power plant, generated 7 billion
kilowatt hours of electricity during the current Iranian year
(March 21, 2023–March 19, 2024). This highlights the importance of
nuclear power plants in the country. Bushehr NPP's electricity
production is predicted to remain strong next year.
However, it was decided last year (2023) to build a nuclear power plant in Iran with a production potential of 20 thousand megawatts. Appropriate companies have been established in the country in this regard. At present, work on the construction of NPPs in five provinces of Iran continues.
To note, the only operating nuclear power plant in Iran is Bushehr NPP Unit 1. Bushehr NPP Unit 1 began operation in 2011. The operation of the unit was transferred from the Russian nuclear company to an Iranian company in 2013. This unit has been producing maximum electricity, i.e., 1,000 megawatt hours, since 2013.
