Iran discloses amount of cost savings realized from Bushehr NPP power generation

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 22. Iran has saved $8 billion over 10 years by generating electricity at the Bushehr nuclear power plant, Iranian Vice President and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Mohammad Eslami said, Trend reports.

He made the remark during his speech at an event organized at the Persian Gulf University in Bushehr province in southern Iran.

According to Eslami, this means 103 million barrels of crude oil.

Eslami added that $1.7 billion has been spent on the construction of Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant. So far, it has secured the funds four times through electricity produced at the plant.

The first unit of Iran's Bushehr nuclear power plant began operation in 2011. The operation of the unit was transferred from the Russian nuclear company to an Iranian company in 2013. This unit has produced a maximum of 1,000 megawatt hours of electricity since 2013. Electricity production at Bushehr NPP has amounted to more than 65 billion kilowatt-hours overthe past 10 years.

The Iranian Vice President noted that the share of the country's NPPs in the world is 11 percent. The production of electricity by the world's NPPs will triple in the coming years. Iran intends to increase electricity production to 20,000 megawatts through the construction of NPPs.

To note, last year (2023), it was decided to build a nuclear power plant in Iran with a production potential of 20,000 megawatts. Accordingly, relevant companies have been established in the country. Nowadays, work on the construction of NPPs continues in five provinces of Iran.
