The eligibility of Mehdi Hashemi Rafsanjani, Fatemeh Rakei and Masoumeh Ebtekar was rejected by the supervisory board of the municipal council elections in Iran, the Mehr News Agency reported.

Mehdi Hashemi is the son of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, Fatemeh Rakei was a former reformist MP, and Masoumeh Ebtekar is a female City Councilor.

Registration for the city council elections across the country ended on Sunday, with thousands of hopefuls registering interest in contesting elections that will be held on the same day as the presidential election on June 14.

According to Tehran Governor General Morteza Tamaddon, 3,715 hopefuls registered for the city council elections in Tehran.

Another son of the former Iranian president Hashemi Rafsanjani, Mehdi Hashemi, is being accused of corruption and country's security breach.

The son of the Iranian ex-president was arrested upon his arrival in Tehran from the UK, where he lived for three years. Hashemi was arrested on charges of propaganda against the state and corruption.

Like his father and sister, Hashemi is a fierce critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
