Iran's Supreme Council of Cyberspace (SCC) has unveiled the first "smart filtering software" which is capable of accurate and rapid detecting of "offensive" content online.

The new software is a step up from the existing filtering system in Iran, that blocks access to the whole website.

The new software only filters "inappropriate content (including text, image and video)" of the Internet pages and allows access to other contents, Iran's Mehr news agency reported Sept. 30.

The software has successfully passed the tests and was commissioned in several organizations and institutions in Iran.

Earlier Iranian officials announced that the Islamic Republic is developing a national program to intelligently filter web content.

"We have signed agreements with three universities and research institutes to develop smart filtering to block only depraved and immoral content, but allowing access to other pages," Mahmoud Vaezi, communications and information technology minister said in May.

"Smart filtering is used for specific targets only and presently the project is undergoing testing," Vaezi was quoted by Mehr news agency as saying.

It should be noted that several of world's most popular social networks, such as Twitter and Facebook are banned in Iran, while users are still able to access them via proxies. A proxy allows bypassing 'gates' meant to block certain sites.

A survey by Iranian Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports indicates that 69.3 percent of the country's young generation use proxy servers to by-pass the filters and access banned Internet websites.

About four million Iranians are using Facebook, according to the culture minister, Ali Jannati who is himself a user of the website.
