US must offer clearer guarantees to secure nuclear deal – Iranian parliament speaker

Tehran, Iran, April 19

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

The Iranian Parliament speaker Ali Larijani has said that the US government must give clearer guarantees that the nuclear talks will bear fruit.

He was making the statements in response to a US Congress move to create the right for the legislative body to oversee a nuclear deal between Tehran and the group P5+1 (the US, UK, France, Russia, China, and Germany).

There are different interpretations of this move, some counting it as indicative of the weakness of US President Barack Obama, some discerning a new trick, and some seeing it as a way to disturb the grounds for an agreement, Larijani said, IRIB news agency reported April 19.

He went on to say that whichever of the possibilities comes out to be the case, the Islamic Republic will continue the negotiations accordingly.

"The Iranian negotiators must adopt alternative scenarios for various conditions," he asserted.

"It is unlikely that the US officials might have thought that by doing so they could gain more power in the negotiations. On the contrary, they will have more difficulty in guaranteeing a deal," he further stated.

Iran and the six powers reached a framework agreement on April 2. The agreement envisions a final deal by July 1.

The deal will limit Iran's nuclear activity and on the other side will remove international sanctions on the country.
