Iranian MP calls for freeing Iranians jailed in U.S.
Baku, Azerbaijan, July 3
By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Head of National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iranian Parliament, Allaeddin Boroujerdi, has requested Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to take measures promptly to free Iranians who are jailed in the U.S.
In a letter to Zarif, Boroujerdi said: "A remarkable number of Iranian educated people have been arrested by the Central Intelligence Agency of the U.S. under the pretext of making an attempt to procure items which have been banned as a result of the sanctions," the Iranian parliament's news agency, ICANA, reported on July 3.
"Considering that the imposition of sanctions is not legal and is a clear oppression to the Iranian nation, and the U.S. has misused its power to impose the sanction, I strongly demand you to make use of all your capacities to free the people who are illegitimately jailed in the US," the letter reads.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on June 13 that thirteen Iranians, who had been imprisoned on charges related to the sanctions, have been freed.
Referring to nine Iranians, who are jailed in US prisons, she said that the consulate department of the Iranian Foreign Ministry is following up the case.
"Arresting the persons was illegal and was based on void convictions. It is hoped that they would be freed as soon as possible."
