Iran supports Russia's military operation in Syria against the terrorist groups, the Islamic Republic's foreign ministry spokeswoman, Marzieh Afkham said.
The Islamic Republic considers the operation as a step in line with fighting against terrorism and resolving the ongoing crisis in the region, Afkham said, Iran 's Fars news agency reported Oct. 1.
The real fight against terrorism which is threatening global and regional peace and security is a necessity, Afkham said, adding materialization of this goal requires serious determination and joint action in cooperation with the governments of Iraq and Syria.
Afkham further underlined that Russia has launched attacks in Syria following the official request of the Syrian government.
Tehran and Moscow share the same stance towards Syria, supporting the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad.
The Islamic Republic views the Syrian regime as its main strategic ally in the region and as part of an "axis of resistance" against Israel.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has recently appealed to the Federation Council for permission to use the Russian armed forces abroad. The Senate approved this request. The head of the Russian Presidential Administration Sergey Ivanov told reporters that this decision concerns Syria and the matter rests in the military air force operation.
Russia sent military aircraft to Syria after Damascus's request. The Russian military air forces attacked the positions of the Islamic State (IS) group.
