Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has called for protecting the county’s northern forests.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has described the country’s northern forests as “among the world’s rarest forests” criticizing those merchants who destroy forests for business purposes, Mehr news agency reported.

The leader further blamed environmental issues such as dust storms and air pollution on the lack of proper vegetation.

Marking the National Week of Natural Resources (March 7-13) in Iran, the supreme leader planted to trees on March 8.

Earlier in January, MP Alimohammad Shaeri warned against forests destruction in the country, saying the total area of the country’s forests has decreased to 14 million hectares from 18 million hectares over the past several years.

According to Mehr, over 40,000 hectares of rainforests located in northern Iran are being destructed on a daily basis.

Forestry Association of Iran has also warned that the country’s forests may be cleared over the next 30 years.
