Iranian security forces have struck several terrorist groups in the country, Intelligence Minister Mahmoud Alavi said.

Speaking to reporters on the presidential election day in Iran, Alavi said that his forces have carried out attacks on several small and medium “terrorist groups” in the country, IRNA news agency reported May 19.

The minister added the terrorists failed to carry out any “successful” attack but he did not disclose further details about the anti-terrorist operations.

Polling for the 12th presidential election, in which incumbent president Hassan Rouhani is seeking reelection, kicked off at about 63,500 polling stations this morning.

According to Iranian sources, more than 56 million are eligible to vote in this round of elections which is the first since the country reached a landmark nuclear deal with the world in 2015.
