Iran interested in developing relations with Uzbekistan – foreign minister

Iran is interested in strengthening economic, political and cultural relations with Uzbekistan, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran.

He made the remark in a meeting with Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov in Tashkent.

The meeting discussed cooperation in a number of areas, including, transit and energy, tourism and culture. They also exchanged views on the peace in Afghanistan, legal cooperation between the two countries in international circles and other issues of mutual interest.

Zarif noted that Iran hopes for the development of cooperation in these areas.

The Iranian minister added that Iran can provide Uzbekistan with access to international waters and thus a transit route to international markets.

Speaking at the meeting, the Uzbek Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Kamilov also said that Iran and Uzbekistan have cooperation in various areas, including in international circles, between the friendship groups of the parliaments of the two countries.

According to Kamilov, cooperation between the two countries in the area of transport and transit is developing. The potential of Iran's ports in the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman should be used more.

As reported, the Iranian Foreign Minister's visit to Central Asian countries - Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Turkmenistan - began yesterday on Apr. 4.
