An Iranian police commander was killed during an armed confrontation with smugglers in the country's western Kurdistan province.
Mohammad Javad Abdolmaleki was commander of the Headquarter to Fight Goods and Currency Smuggling of Qorveh city. He was killed during a shootout with alcohol smugglers, the country's Mehr news agency reported Aug. 24.
According to Iranian officials at least 10 police officers were killed in clashes with armed smugglers during the one-year period to March 21. Some 100 armed smugglers were also killed during the operations in the same period.
