A number of Iranian high-ranking officials were killed and gone missing as a result of the stampede in Mina valley outside the Saudi city of Mecca, Ali Akbar Velayati, Iranian supreme leader's top adviser on international affairs said.

Earlier on Sept. 24, a stampede occurred in the Mina valley, where Muslims were performing the Hajj rites.

Velayati said Saudi Arabia should carry out the necessary work on investigating this issue, Iran's ISNA news agency reported Sept.30.

The names of the killed and missing Iranian officials have not been revealed.

Meanwhile, aside from Iran's former ambassador to Libya Ghazanfar Roknabadi, the head of institute for IRGC (Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps) strategic studies Ali Asghar Fouladgar is also among the missing, according to the official website of Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization.

Moreover, several employees of the Foreign Ministry, Education Ministry, as well as the Office of the Supreme Leader are also on the list of those missing.

Over 240 Iranian pilgrims missing and 239 more were killed as a result of the stampede in Mina valley, according to the latest data.
