Tehran, Iran, Nov. 24

By Tamkin Jafarov - Trend:

Mehdi Kuchekzadeh, an MP from Tehran, resigned in protest against the actions of the Parliament's Speaker Ali Larijani.

Kuchekzadeh spoke Nov. 23 during a meeting in the parliament on the destruction of 1,700 tons of potatoes in the country's Fars province.

Some 1,700 tons of potatoes were earlier dug in the ground in the province of Fars to be destroyed due to decrease in prices in the market.

Kuchekzadeh said this step is a result of the capitalist economy system, and made a remark to the minister of agriculture of Iran.

"At a time when many people are starving in the country, no one has the right to destroy 1,700 tons of potatoes," said Kuchekzadeh.

But his remark wasn't accepted by the Parliament's Speaker Ali Larijani, who told Kuchekzadeh that this issue wasn't on the meeting's agenda, noting that the meeting topic was related to insurance.

Following this, Kuchekzadeh, in protest against Larijani's actions, sent a notice to the parliament stating about his resignation.
