Turkey calls on Israel to extend moratorium on construction of settlements

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu today called on the Israeli leadership to a moratorium which expired last Sunday on construction of Jewish settlements in the West Bank, the website of CNN Turk reports.

"Turkey attaches great importance to the continuation of peaceful direct negotiations between Palestine and Israel, but both sides equally should demonstrate the willingness and desire," Davutoglu said at a press conference at the UN General Assembly in New York.

Members of the Middle East Quartet - Russia, the UN, the U.S. and the EU - also called on Israel to extend moratorium on construction of settlements in occupied territories.

Construction works have restarted in the occupied territories of the West Bank on Monday.

Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu said that settlement construction remains as a major problem in the peace process, despite the fact that the peace dialogue continues, demanding that Israel to stop its settlement activity, and impose a moratorium on the occupied territories.
