Pakistan attaches great importance to its relations with Azerbaijan, Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said today.

Stressing the historical, cultural, and religious similarities between the two countries, Prime Minister stressed at a meeting with Azerbaijani Ambassador to Islamabad Dashgin Shikarov that this is important to develop the cooperation between our two countries, the embassy told Trend.

The head of the Pakistani government reaffirmed Azerbaijan's full support for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and thanked official Baku for the support for the Kashmir issue.

Gilani congratulated Azerbaijan with its election to the UN Security Council. He expressed his gratitude for supporting Pakistan to be elected to this organization.
Azerbaijan and Pakistan were elected non-permanent members of the UN Security Council for 2012-2013.

Stressing the great potential in economic cooperation, Prime Minister said that he gave specific instructions to the Pakistani delegation that will participate in the upcoming meeting of the intergovernmental commission in Baku on December 6-7.

Gilani expressed his gratitude to the leadership and Azerbaijani people for their financial and moral support for liquidating natural disasters in the country and a school in Kashmir constructed by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation.

Azerbaijani ambassador expressed his condolences to Prime Minister in connection with the deaths of Pakistani servicemen in an air strike of the coalition forces in Afghanistan.
Referring to the political and economic ties between the two countries, Shikarov thanked the Pakistani authorities for supporting Azerbaijan's position in the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and its election to the UN Security Council.

The diplomat expressed confidence that the forthcoming meeting of the intergovernmental commission will give fresh impetus to bilateral relations.

Ambassador invited Pakistani Prime Minister to visit Azerbaijan. This will further develop the relations between the two countries.

Shikarov delivered a check worth $ 2 million to Prime Minister. The Azerbaijani government has allocated it for humanitarian aid to flood victims in Sindh.
