Foreign trade of Azerbaijan (january-september 2013)

The foreign trade turnover with 144 world countries amounted to $26.13 billion in January-September 2013, or 6.39 percent more than in January-September 2012. The volume of exports increased by 1.51 percent to $18.06 billion compared to the same period of 2012. The volume of import increased by 19.22 percent and hit $8.07 billion. Azerbaijan exported 1,827 products, and imported 5,839 different goods. As of Jan.-Sept. 2013, the nominal index of export exceeded import. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $9.99 billion.

As in previous periods, oil, gas and oil products were mainly exported from Azerbaijan in Jan.-Sept. 2013.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports as of Jan.-Sept. 2013 (84.75 percent) fell to the export of crude oil.

The exports of crude oil increased by 0.32 percent compared to Jan.-Sept. 2012.

The export of oil products decreased by 7.45 percent during this period. As of Jan.-Sept. 2013, around 4.95 percent of total exports from the country fell to the oil products.

Some 20.890 million tons of oil were transported via the Heydar Aliyev Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, 2.985 million tons - the Baku-Supsa pipeline, 1.325 million tons - via the Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline and 702,549 tons were shipped by rail to Baku-Batumi in January-September.

In January -September 2013 gas exports from Azerbaijan (control device data) hit ​​72.4 percent of export for entire 2012. As of January- September 2013, the share of gas in total exports amounted to 3.09 percent (3.28 percent a month earlier) compared to 2.71 percent for whole 2012.

According to the State Customs Committee, gas exports from the country amounted to 5.063.026 billion cubic meters in January -September 2013.

Around 627.794 million cubic meters were exported in September compared to 585.519 million cubic meters in August.

Azerbaijan has been a net exporter of gas since 2007, primarily due to Shah Deniz field.

Azerbaijan exported chemical products to the amount of $41.43 million in January-September or by 65.28 percent less than in the same period of last year. The figure hits 0.23 percent of a total export volume.

In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during the reported period Azerbaijan exported commodities to Italy totaling $4.406.4 bln which makes up 24.40 percent of total exports. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Indonesia ($2.286.3 bln) and Thailand ($1.453.4 bln) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.

Russia ranks first on largest import volume ($1.162.1 billion) in Jan.-Sept. 2013. About 14.40 percent of the Azerbaijani imports fell to it. Turkey ranks second - $1.094.7 billion and Great Britain - third ($916.6 million).

Most of Azerbaijan's imports or 24.87 percent in the reporting period fell to the import of machinery, equipment, electrical equipment and spare parts. The machinery and equipment worth $2.00 billion were imported in January-September or by 8.18 percent more than in the same period of last year.

Many vehicles and parts worth $1 billion (a 4.95 percent increase, the share in the total imports - 13.89 percent) and wood and wooden goods - by $242.5 million (a 21.70 percent increase, the share in the total imports - 3.01 percent) were brought in the country.

Azerbaijan imported wheat flour to the amount of $17.17 million in January-September or 0.21 percent of total imports and exceeds the index of the same period of last year by nearly 15 times. According to the report, imports of wheat increased by 89.94 percent - up to $328.55 million per year or 4.07 percent of the total import volume of the country during this period.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in Jan.-Sept. 2013 amounted to $2.89 billion or 11.0 percent of total volume of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover. Exports to CIS countries for the period totaled $949 million by increasing by 5.26 percent and imports - $1.94 billion by increasing by 24.16 percent. As a result, the country had a red ink in trading with them to the amount of $1 billion.

Thus, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with EU countries amounted to $11.126 billion in January-September 2013, or 42.5 percent of the country's foreign trade turnover.

Around 46.3 percent of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover fell to the countries-non EU and CIS members in January-September or $26.127 billion.

In January-September Azerbaijani exports to the EU countries amounted to $8.411 billion, or 46.3 percent of total exports ($18.057 billion) amid a 2.15 percent growth. Imports from EU ($2.715 billion) increased by 46.3 percent and hit 33.65 percent of total imports ($8.069 billion). As a result, the country had a trade surplus with the EU at the level of $5.695 billion or 57 percent of the country's trade surplus ($ 9.988 billion).

In January-September, exports to the countries-non EU and CIS members decreased by 0.69 percent - up to $8.697 billion or 48.16 percent of total exports.

Imports increased by 4.19 percent and hit $3.403 billion or 42.18 percent of all imports. As a result, the country received surplus worth $ 5.293 billion with these countries.

During this period, about 5,991 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 3,460 - legal entities and 2,531 - physical entities.

The share of public sector in exports totaled $17.03 billion (94.3 percent), private sector - $907.2 million (5.02 percent), the share of physical entities - $125.65 million (0.7 percent).

The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $2.5 billion (31.07 percent), the private sector - $5.16 billion (63.94 percent), physical entities -$400.73 million (4.97 percent).
