The foreign trade turnover with 149 world countries amounted to $34.68 billion in 2013, or 3.35 percent more than in 2012. The volume of exports increased by 0.28 percent to $23.98 billion compared to 2012. The volume of import increased by 10.95 percent and hit $10.71 billion. Azerbaijan exported 2,111 products, and imported 6,159 different goods. As of 2013, the nominal index of export exceeded import. This formed the foreign trade surplus to the amount of $13.27 billion.
As in previous periods, oil, gas and oil products were mainly exported from Azerbaijan in 2013.

Most of Azerbaijan's exports as of 2013 (84.44 percent) fell to the export of crude oil.
The exports of crude oil increased by 0.06 percent compared to 2012.
The export of oil products decreased by 8.53 percent during this period. As of 2013, around 5.04 percent of total exports from the country fell to the oil products.
Some 27.4 million tons of oil were transported via the Heydar Aliyev Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, 4.028 million tons - the Baku-Supsa pipeline, 1.750 million tons - via the Baku-Novorossiysk pipeline and 991,992 tons were shipped by rail to Baku-Batumi in 2013.
In 2013 gas exports from Azerbaijan (control device data) hit 108.21 percent of export for 2012. As of 2013, the share of gas in a total export volume amounted to 2.93 percent compared to 2.71 percent for 2012.
According to the State Customs Committee, gas exports from the country amounted to 7.294 billion cubic meters in 2013.
Around 870.184 million cubic meters were exported in December. This is the best index for the month.
Around 3.035 billion cubic meters of gas to the amount of $701.980 million were formalized upon the cargo customs declarations. The exports increased by 8.21 percent compared to 2012. Around 256.003 million cubic meters of exported gas worth $53.334 million were formalized in December.
An export price in 2013 was $ 229.03 per 1,000 cubic meters. In December it was equal to $208.33, and the best price was recorded in January 2013 - $283.17. In 2013, Azerbaijan supplied 2,215,508 tons of gas condensate via BTC oil pipeline, including 198,165 tons in December.
Azerbaijan exported chemical products to the amount of $57.16 million in 2013 or by 67.25 percent less than in 2012. The figure hits 0.24 percent of a total export volume.
In this period, the highest amount of export fell on Italy. Thus, during this period Azerbaijan exported goods totaling $5.989 billion to Italy which makes up 24.98 percent of a total export volume. Mainly oil and oil products are exported to this country. Indonesia ($2.771 bln) and Thailand ($1.665 bln) hold leading positions. Italy has maintained its leading position since 2008 excluding early three months. Turkey took a lead in January and U.S. in February and March 2008.
Russia ranks first on largest import volume ($1.505 billion) in 2013. About 14.05 percent of the Azerbaijani imports fell to it. Turkey ranks second - $1.463 billion and Great Britain - third ($ 1.333 billion).
Most of Azerbaijan's imports or 25.75 percent in the reporting period fell to the import of machinery, equipment, electrical equipment and spare parts. The machinery and equipment worth $2.75 billion were imported in 2013 or by 4.88 percent more than in 2012.
Many vehicles and parts worth over $1 billion (the share in the total import volume - 13.40 percent) and wood and wooden goods - by $279.32 million (a 1.90 percent increase, the share in the total import volume - 2.61 percent) were brought in the country.
Azerbaijan imported wheat flour to the amount of $17.97 million in 2013 or 0.17 percent of a total import volume and exceeds the index of 2012 twofold. According to the report, imports of wheat increased by 16.32 percent - up to $395.28 million per year or 3.69 percent of the total import volume of the country during this period.
Imports of milk significantly increased by 35.52 percent compared to 2012. According to the Azerbaijani Confederation of Entrepreneurs, the total milk yield in the country currently hits 1.7 million tons of milk per year. However, only 30 percent of dairy products fall to the domestic production, while 70 percent of consumption is ensured through imports. Milk production does not hit 72 liters per capita. There is a great need for new dairy enterprises.

According to the State Customs Committee, Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover with CIS countries in 2013 amounted to $4.063 billion or 11.75 percent of total volume of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover. Exports to the CIS countries for the period totaled $1.509 billion (6.3 percent of a total export volume) by increasing by 20.58 percent and imports - $2.553 billion (23.83 percent) by increasing by 7.25 percent. As a result, the country had a red ink in trading with them to the amount of $1.043 billion.
Around 44.25 percent or $15.349 billion of Azerbaijan's foreign trade turnover fell to the countries-non EU and CIS members.
In 2013 Azerbaijani exports to the EU countries amounted to $11.513 billion, or 48.02 percent of a total export volume amid a 0.14 percent decrease. Imports from EU ($3.763 billion) increased by 40.77 percent and hit 35.33 percent of a total import volume. As a result, the country had a black ink of trade balance with the EU at the level of $7.750 billion or 58.44 percent of the country's foreign trade surplus ($ 13.263 billion).
In 2013, exports to the countries-non EU and CIS members decreased by 1.56 percent - up to $10.952 billion or 45.68 percent of a total export volume.
Imports decreased by 4.47 percent and hit $4.396 billion or 41.47 percent of all imports. As a result, the country received black ink worth $ 6.556 billion with these countries.
During this period, about 7,005 legal and physical entities were involved in foreign trade operations, including 3,873 - legal entities and 3,132 - physical entities.
The share of public sector in exports totaled $22.37 billion (93.59 percent), private sector - $1.38 billion (5.75 percent), the share of physical entities - $228.76 million (0.95 percent).
The share of public sector in import operations amounted to $3.28 billion (30.63 percent), the private sector - $6.96 billion (64.98 percent), physical entities -$467.14 million (4.36 percent).
