а) Oil and Gas Production

In January-May 2017, 15.93 million tons of oil and gas condensate were produced in Azerbaijan, which is 9.2 percent less than in the same period of 2016, according to a report of the country’s State Statistics Committee.

In 2016, 41.03 million tons of oil and gas condensate were produced in Azerbaijan, which is by 1.5 percent less than in 2015.

The main oil output in Azerbaijan accounts for the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli (ACG) block of oil and gas fields.

The output of commercial gas in Azerbaijan stood at 7.82 billion cubic meters in January-May 2017, same as in January-May 2016, according to the State Statistics Committee.

The commercial gas output stood at 18.71 billion cubic meters in Azerbaijan in 2016, as compared to 19.72 billion cubic meters in 2015.

Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR produced 3.1 million tons of oil from offshore and onshore fields in January-May 2017 as compared to 3.16 million tons in the same period of 2016, SOCAR said in a message.

SOCAR produces oil from offshore and onshore fields of Azerbaijan using its own funds. A part of this oil is processed at refineries in Baku, while another part is exported via the Baku-Novorossiysk and Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipelines.

Moreover, SOCAR produces light oil from Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block of oil and gas fields jointly with foreign partners.

The total volume of the oil produced at the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli block and the fields developed independently by SOCAR stood at 15.93 million tons in January-May 2017, as compared to 17.54 million tons in the same period of 2016.

SOCAR produced 2.47 billion cubic meters of gas from onshore and offshore fields using its own funds in January-May 2017, as compared to 2.65 billion cubic meters of gas in the same period of 2016.

SOCAR also produces gas from the Shah Deniz and Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli fields, developing them jointly with foreign partners.

Total volume of gas produced from the contract fields and fields being developed independently by SOCAR stood at 11.72 billion cubic meters in January-May 2017, as compared to 12.47 billion cubic meters in the same period of 2016.

SOCAR drilled 63,340 meters in January-May 2017, compared to 42,490 meters drilled in the same period of 2016.

Some 57,900 meters accounted for production drilling, while the rest part accounted for exploration drilling in January-May 2017.

SOCAR has commissioned 30 new wells since early 2017.

In 2016, SOCAR drilled 105,250 meters against 104,410 meters drilled in 2015.

In January-May 2017, 3.66 billion manat were invested in Azerbaijan’s oil and gas sector, as compared to 3.68 billion manat in the same period of 2016 (a 0.4 percent decrease), the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said in a report.

SOCAR has constructed a new generation oil platform in Baku.

The construction has been successfully completed. All the necessary tests have been conducted at the platform. The platform was jacked to the Baku Shipyard and it is being prepared for the opening.

The new rig is designed for drilling of wells with a depth of up to 8,000 meters at a sea depth of 1,000 meters.

b) Processing

Azerbaijan produced 2.07 million tons of oil products in January-May 2017 compared to 2.3 million tons in the same period of 2016, said a report of Azerbaijan’s State Statistics Committee.

SOCAR, which is the sole producer of oil products in Azerbaijan, is currently modernizing its processing facilities, as the fuel consumption has increased in the country.

Azerbaijan produced 524,100 tons of gasoline in January-May 2017, which is 11.3 percent more than in the same period of 2016.

Azerbaijan produced 5.17 million tons of oil products in 2016 compared to 5.45 million tons in 2015.

A service agreement on the preliminary detailed design for the gas processing and polyethylene petrochemical complex as part of the SOCAR GPC project was signed in China’s capital Beijing.

The document was signed between Azerbaijan’s state oil company SOCAR, China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and Technip company during the international ‘One Belt – One Road’ forum, said the message from SOCAR GPC company.

This agreement will regulate the services to be rendered by China Huanqiu Contracting and Engineering Corporation (HQC), subsidiary of CNPC and Technip Italy for the preliminary detailed design work as part of the SOCAR GPC project.

The cost of the project is around $4 billion.
