Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in May signed an order on additional measures to improve the material and technical base of silk production in the country.
Some 4.5 million manat envisaged in the Azerbaijani state budget-2017 will be allocated from the president's reserve fund to the ministry of agriculture to restore the Gakh breeding sericulture station, create additional production sites, provide with modern equipment to improve the material and technical base of silkworm breeding.
Silkworm breeding is one of the traditional spheres of agriculture in the country.
The agricultural production volume in actual prices amounted to 1.53 billion manat in Azerbaijan in January-May 2017 increasing by 2 percent compared to January-May 2016.
According to the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee’s report, the crop production increased by 0.1 percent and reached 167.2 million manat, livestock production – 2.3 percent and reached 1,365.4 million manat in the reporting period.
The process of sowing spring crops continued during the reporting period.
As of June 1, 2017, some 435,700 hectares were sown.
According to the report, in particular, 67,600 hectares of cereals and leguminous plants (including 32,300 hectares of fodder corn), 58,700 hectares of potatoes, 64,200 hectares of vegetables, 22,200 hectares of melons and gourds, 134,600 hectares of tomatoes, 13,800 hectares of sugar beet, 12,700 hectares of feeding sunflower, 3,200 hectares of tobacco, 134,600 hectares of cotton, 49,500 hectares of permanent plants, 2,200 hectares of annual plants and around 7,000 hectares of other spring plants have been sown since the beginning of the season.

According to the report, as of June 1, over 81,300 tons of potatoes and 107,200 tons of vegetables were collected, which is by 46.1 percent and 6.6 percent more than in the same period of 2016.
According to the report, as of June 1, 11,200 tons of fruits and berries and 312.6 tons of tea were collected, which is by 1.4 percent and 22.7 percent less than in the same period of 2016.
As of June 1, 17,500 tons of grain were harvested from a 7,400-hectare-area (23.7 centners of harvest per hectare).
Some 78,000 tons of grain were harvested from a 34,900-hectare-area (the yield was 22.4 centners per hectare) in the same period of last year.
So, 189,000 tons of meat in live weight, 817,800 tons of milk, 739.8 million pieces of eggs and 12,000 tons of wool were produced in the country in January-May 2017.
Meat production increased by 2.9 percent, milk production by 0.5 percent, egg production - by 6.5 percent, while wool production decreased by 6.5 percent in January-May 2017 compared to January-May 2016.
