Tajik special services general Abdullo Nazarov was killed by former opposition fighters. Such statement was made jointly by Tajik National Security Committee and Interior Ministry, ITAR-TASS reported.
According to the statement, preliminary investigation revealed that the crime had been committed by members of illegal armed group headed by boundary detachment commander Tolib Aembekov.
"Aembekov and his assistants refused to stand before the law, ignoring the law enforcement agencies' requirement," National Security Committee and Interior Ministry said.
According to the statement, Aembekov headed illegal armed group, which had been smuggling drugs, tobacco products, and precious stones for many years. The group was involved in several serious crimes.
Tajik President Emomali Rakhmon ordered to create a government commission, which included deputies, heads of security agencies and religious leaders. Within three days the commissioners were negotiating with the former opposition fighters, asking them to lay down their arms. However, the group leaders categorically rejected the proposal and "started to mobilize the criminal armed groups", National Security Committee and Interior Ministry said. In this regard, a special operation was launched to arrest members of the criminal group to normalize the situation in the city of Khorog and its suburbs.
Regional head of National Security Committee Abdullo Nazarov was killed on Saturday evening, two kilometers far from the city of Khorog in eastern Tajikistan. The general was returning from a business trip when his car was stopped by unknown people. According to the National Security Committee, Nazarov died from stab wounds.
