Locals said Tuesday that air strikes claimed the lives of 25 civilians on Monday in Gereshek district of Helmand province in south Afghanistan.

"There were air raids on Yakhchal village yesterday which left 25 civilians dead," Akhtar Mohammad, a resident of Yakhchal, told Xinhua without giving details.

Another villager Mohammad Farooq also said that 25 civilians were killed in air raids on Monday.

Abdul Ahad Khan, the governor of Gereshek district, told Xinhua that only four militants were killed in the air strikes and any claim of civilian casualties was baseless.
