Hearings on TV content at the National Assembly of Armenia

Parliamentary hearings on TV content and regulation of TV advertising legislations were held at the National Assembly on December 19. Representatives of the Armenian National Commission on Television and Radio, State Language Inspection, Public TV and other television companies, NGOs, specialized unions and experts were invited to participate in the hearings.

Chairman of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Education, Science, Culture, Youth Affairs and Sport Armen Ashotyan said the Parliament is currently considering a number of draft lawn on the activity of electronic media, telecommunication and advertising. Taking into consideration the numerous problems existing in the sphere, the Committee found it proper to hold large-scale discussions on the issues.

Armen Ashotyan noted that in the near future the National Assembly is set to consider a legislative package on advertising activity, and the Committee is ready to take into consideration the suggestions and opinions of participants of the hearings.

Noting that the issue of joining the European Convention of European Convention on Trans-Border Television is to be discussed at the National Assembly in 2009, Mr. Ashotyan stressed the necessity of bringing Armenian legislation in line with European standards. He noted that the committee is preparing to organize hearings on issues of digital TV broadcasting, as well, reported Public Radio.
