Global crisis going to affect the migration situation in Armenia

Armenia Materials 27 February 2009 17:12 (UTC +04:00)

The global economic crisis will affect the migration situation in Armenia, Head of the Migration Department of the Ministry of Territorial Administration of Armenia Gagik Yeganyan told a press conference today.

He said the consequences of the crisis will be felt in three directions. First, the volume of money transfers from abroad will reduce. Secondly, the number of Armenian citizens working aboard will lessen because of the lack of jobs, and this will, in turn, result in the increase of the number of people returning to motherland.

According to Gagik Yeganyan, the Government has already taken measures to mitigate the situation. "The Employment Agency declared recently that there are jobs available in Armenia today. We hope that those who return will be employed here. Besides, we have various proposals to offer them," the Head of the Department on Migration said, reported Public Radio.
