Armenian presidential candidate’s health deteriorates

Armenian presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan is still in the hospital. His condition has deteriorated. He previously suffered an assassination attempt, coordinator of Hayrikyan’s election staff Manya Aivazian told Panorama.am.

Armenian presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan is still in the hospital. His condition has deteriorated. He previously suffered an assassination attempt, coordinator of Hayrikyan's election staff Manya Aivazian told Panorama.am.

"His health has deteriorated," Aivazian said. "Some additional problems have occurred, but I cannot give specific information. Doctors will give more detailed information."
Aivazian said that Hayrikyan's lawyer stressed that at present, we are not going to appeal to the Constitutional court, but I am not ruling anything out, I cannot say exactly whether we will apply to the Constitution Court or not.

Aivazian added that Hayrikyan's campaign is conducted by his staff without the candidate's participation.

On Jan. 31, Armenian presidential candidate, Paruyr Hayrikyan was shot in the shoulder on Tpagrichneri Street (Pechatniki) in the centre of Yerevan, where his parents live.

A criminal case was filed upon Articles 34 and 305 of the Armenian Criminal Code.
The National Security Service is investigating this case.

According to the Constitution of Armenia, in the event of insurmountable obstacles for a candidate, the election of the president is postponed for two weeks.

The sixth Armenian presidential election will be held Feb.18 from 08:00 to 20:00 local time. The head of state is elected for five years.

Those running for the presidency are the incumbent president and ruling Republican Party leader Serzh Sargsyan, former Prime Minister Grant Bagratyan, chairman of the Heritage Party Raffi Hovhannisyan, Paruyr Hayrikyan, Arman Melikyan, Andrias Ghukasyan, Vardan Setrakyan and the leader of the National Accord Party Aram Harutyunyan.
