Rustavi 2 TV Wants Gachechiladze to Apologize for ‘Riffraff’ Remarks

( Civil ) - Rustavi 2 TV said MP Levan Gachechiladze, a former presidential candidate of the nine-party opposition coalition, should apologize for labeling "verbally insulting" the television's journalist.

Speaking at a live political talk-show, Primetime, aired by Rustavi 2 TV on February 14, Gachechiladze slammed one of the Rustavi 2 TV journalist, whom he did not identify, as "a riffraff."

"They [Rustavi 2 TV] journalists are not real journalists, they are in fact members of a headquarters of [President] Mikheil Saakashvili and [parliamentary speaker] Nino Burjanadze's machine of lie," MP Gachechiladze said.

The Rustavi 2 TV's news program Kurieri (Courier) said in a statement issued on February 15 that "justified criticism is acceptable." "But we believe that it [Gachechiladze's remark] was a personal insult and on behalf of the Kurieri we are stating that we are suspending professional cooperation with Levan Gachechiladze, unless he publicly apologies."

Speaking in a talk-show at the Georgian Public Broadcaster late on February 15, Levan Gachechiladze, again criticized the Rustavi 2 TV for as he said waging "dirty PR campaign" against him and the opposition.
