The Georgian President Mikheil Saakashviliїs actions in South Ossetia were a major mistake, congressman and democrat Howard Berman, the chairman of the foreign affairs committee of the US House of Representatives said.
їSaakashviliїs decision to commence military actions in South Ossetia was a terrible mistake,ї Berman stated making a speech at hearings of the US Congress on 9 September.
However, he stressed that the United States should not condemn Georgia.
їBefore we will severely assess the situation, we should take into account developing provocations, with which the Georgian Government faced,ї Berman said.
According to the US congressman, the Russian Government sought to instigate the Georgian President Saakashvili through doubtful juridical and military actions.
Russiaїs subsequent use of disproportionate forces and other actions clearly indicated that its objective was not to protect citizens in South Ossetia, how Russia confirms, but to remove democratically elected head of the sovereign state,ї the chairman of the committee said, РИА reported.
