Georgia promotes gender equality

Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze met with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, Ms. Michelle Bachelet within the framework of the General Debate of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Sept.21, the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported.

Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze met with the UN Under-Secretary-General for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, Ms. Michelle Bachelet within the framework of the General Debate of the 66th session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Sept.21, the Georgian Foreign Ministry reported.

The two discussed various current issues concerning co-operation between Georgia and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). Vashadze provided Bachelet with up-to-date information on the progress Georgia has achieved in the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. According to available data, Georgia is the regional leader in the sphere of gender equality.

Vashadze and Ms. Bachelet also touched upon the difficult situation of women living in or internally displaced from Georgia's occupied territories, and discussed possible future joint measures with a view to improving their situation.
