Georgian Foreign Minister Grigol Vashadze received OSCE chairperson, Ireland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore, who is on a visit to Tbilisi. Vashadze said at a joint press conference following the meeting that the talks were very interesting.
"We discussed the situation in the region, as well as the tensions that exist between our several neighbouring countries. We discussed Georgian-Russian relations and the constant threats from Russia, as well as how incident prevention and response mechanisms should work," Vashadze said.
For his part, Gilmore noted that the meeting discussed the outcome of the conflict in 2008, the course of the Geneva discussions and bilateral Georgian-Irish relations.
Military action was launched in the Georgian territory of South Ossetia on Aug.8 in 2008. Later Russian troops occupied the city of Tskhinvali and drove the Georgian military back. Russia recognised the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia in late August. In response, Tbilisi broke off diplomatic relations with Moscow and announced two unrecognised republics as being occupied territories.
