Georgia, Tbilisi, Sept.18 / Trend, N.Kirtskhalia /

Georgian President has promised to punish persons responsible for torturing prisoners.

Protest actions against torture in Prison No.8 in Gldani (Tbilisi) ended in Georgian cities on Wednesday. Several hundred people gathered at night in front of the building of the State Philharmonic and blocked the road.

Video demonstrating abuse of prisoners was disseminated by opposition television companies "Maestro" and "9th channel". In particular, they demonstrated videos of torture of prisoners serving sentences in Gldani Prison No.8.

Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili responded to these facts, making a special statement before the public. He said he watched the videos showing torture of prisoners and he was shocked and got very angry.

"The acts that took place in Gldani Prison are horrific acts against dignity of human and his rights. All those involved in it and allowed it deserves a severe punishment. All those who have been responsible for prevention of such cases will be dismissed from service, and those who committed it, I promise, will spend many years in prison," Saakashvili said.
