The first meeting of new Georgian parliament will be opened by the incoming President Mikheil Saakashvili. This is provided by the 120th article of a new law which will take effect commencing the day of the announcement of the final election protocol.

The head of state will hand over to the oldest deputy who will head the meeting until the election of the speaker.

The chairman of the Central Election Commission has to be present at the meeting. The patriarch, senior clerics of other religious denominations, the chairmen of constitutional and Supreme Court and other social representatives could be invited.

After recognition of the power, no less than two thirds of the parliament has to take an oath.

The issues at the meeting will be discussed in the following order: the election of a speaker and his deputies, establishment of committees and election of all representatives according to the law as well as consideration of issues regarding parliamentary members.

The first meeting will take place not later than September 20.

Parliamentary elections were held in Georgia on a mixed - list, majority system. Around 150 MPs must be elected - 77 on the lists (a passing barrier of five per cent) and 73 - single-seat constituencies.
