General Secretary of the United National Movement Party of President Mikheil Saakashvili and ex-Prime Minister Vano Merabishvili urged the new government to switch to emergency status.
The reason for this is the financial and economic crisis in the country, Merabishvili said at a briefing.
"We have already talked about the crisis in the Georgian economy. However, today we reaffirm it with figures which are obtained from different sources," he said.
Merabishvili stated that the crisis has affected in the first place, the rates of economic growth.
According to him, in October last year economic growth in Georgia was recorded at 6.3 percent, in November at 3.6 per cent and in December last year, the situation was 'a failure' at minus 5.2 per cent.
"Under these circumstances, my government switched to emergency status in order to urgently solve the problem and achieve positive results," Merabishvili said.
According to him, business representatives are still experiencing pressure from the law enforcement authorities and their activities are often monitored by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Georgia.
