Chairman of the Central Election Commission of Georgia Zurab Kharatishvili has resigned, having already submitted a relevant statement to parliament, CEC Secretary Eka Azarashvili said at a press briefing on Monday.

According to her, Kharatishvili will make an official statement on August 15.

"I can not talk about the reasons that prompted him to resign, he would mention those personally," Azarashvili said.

Under the existing rules, within a week Georgian president will present three candidates for the post of Chairman of the Central Election Commission on the recommendation of the civil society. The minority members of the CEC, in this case members of the ruling Georgian Dream Coalition, will have to choose one candidate. Kharatishvili was considered a protege of the president's United National Movement, whereas a protege of the ruling Georgian Dream Coalition is expected to replace him.

Previously, some NGOs have accused Kharatishvili of illegally rejecting registration of persons with two citizenships as presidential candidates. Among them is the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia Salome Zurabishvili.
