Georgia claims violation of its airspace

Tbilisi, Georgia, April 10
By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

On the 9th April, "An-2" plane violated Georgian airspace and flew several times over the dividing line on the border with the breakaway region - Abkhazia, Georgian First Deputy Minister David Zalkalian told journalists.

"The preliminary information says that it was a reconnaissance flight, during which photos of the Georgian military units` deployment areas were shot," Zalkalian said.

It should be noted that the Antonov An-2 is a Soviet mass-produced single-engine biplane utility/agricultural aircraft.

Zalkalian noted that the Foreign Ministry will carefully examine all the circumstances of the incident, and information about the violation of Georgia's airspace will be submitted to the international organizations.

"We will investigate all the circumstances of violations of Georgian airspace," Zalkaliani said, adding that all the international organizations and parties of the Geneva talks will be informed about the incident.

Tbilisi currently doesn't have any diplomatic relations with Moscow, following a large scale military action that was launched in Georgia's South Ossetia on August 8, 2008.

Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military. Later, Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
