EPP calls on Georgian authorities to stop persecuting opponents

Tbilisi, Georgia, Nov. 4

By Nana Kirtzkhalia - Trend:

The European People's Party called on the Georgian authorities to cease political persecution of opponents.

At a meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the European Parliament, the EPP representatives made very strong statements with regard to the persecution of political opponents by the Georgian authorities.

The members of the EPP, Europe's largest political organization, want to support the ratification of the EU Association Agreement, but before this the Georgian government should exercise caution, and abandon the use of selective justice.

The Member of the European Parliament (MEP) Anna Fotyga said the EU member states should have an impact on the Georgian authorities to stop the political persecution of opponents and implementation of electoral justice.

The MEP said she supports the ratification of the association agreement of Georgia and the EU, but the EU member states should have an impact on the Georgian authorities in order to avoid the use of double standards, not only in the judicial system, but also from the point of view of political persecution of opposition.
