BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 24. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) will continue working with Georgia on the implementation of significant reforms, Oleg Dzioubinski, the Regional Adviser and focal point for Georgia at UNECE told Trend.

According to the regional adviser, UNECE works with Georgia to accelerate the transition towards a Circular Economy.

"Several capacity-building activities are planned in Georgia this year, including the development of a gap analysis and a roadmap for waste management. This will support the implementation of the country’s Third Environmental Action Program for 2017-2021, which focuses on sustainable use of natural resources, ecosystem preservation, adaptation to climate change and energy-efficient and renewable energy technologies and practices," Dzioubinski said.

UNECE will continue providing support to Georgia on environmental governance. This includes organizing National Policy Dialogues on Integrated Water Resource Management, which provide a platform for key stakeholders to identify, prepare, and implement reforms in the field of water policy and advance the water and health agenda, he said.

UNECE is going to support Georgia’s transport sector as well. In particular, the recommendations of the road safety performance review and in the development of the national road safety strategy will be carried out, he added.

As Dzioubinski said, UNECE is also working towards the improvement of the energy efficiency of the building supply chain industry and its products, with a view to delivering high-performance buildings. This will have positive effects on energy and resource uses, and thus on the climate.

"We are also preparing a smart sustainable city profile for Tbilisi, which will include recommendations for local development project and innovative financing mechanisms for the development of urban infrastructure, which will support Georgia in achieving urban-related Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development," the regional adviser concluded.
