BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 5. APM Terminals, a unit of Danish Maersk shipping company, plans to build a new terminal at Poti Sea Port in Georgia, Trend reports via Georgian media.

According to the port, the construction is expected to start in 2022 and last till 2024.

Poti Port presented a project to expand the current location north of the site several years ago. The company received a land-use permit for the first phase of expansion in 2020, although a formal agreement between the APM Terminals and Georgia’s Government on the project has not been signed yet. If this agreement is reached, the port operator will be able to start a new terminal project.

The port forecasts major traffic flows from Central Asia with new terminal construction. In addition, ships with deep-water vessels, and thus the port, will be able to offer improved customer offers to service larger-capacity vessels and provide faster rotation, resulting in faster infrastructure and improved supply chains, which is good for both Poti and Georgia.

Poti Port is the largest logistics center in Georgia and accounts for a significant part of the country’s trade turnover and international transit.

According to the recently published report, Poti Port's revenues in 2021 amounted to 187.5 million Georgian lari ($60.6 million), while the net profit totaled 83 million Georgian lari ($26.8 million).
