The events occurred when "officials in patrol work were ambushed by armed gangs in the Valle Verde sector, in El Callao (Bolívar state, south)", according to a police report.

Reinforcements of the army and the police were sent to the site of "the armed confrontation, discharging nine subjects that kept the municipality terrified" from El Callao, the report added.

In the shooting, Freddy López, a captain of the militarized National Guard and who was in charge of the commission, was injured, according to the report, which did not specify his state of health.

The confrontation occurred in a rural area of ​​El Callao, which together with neighboring Sifontes concentrates important gold reserves.

The region, which borders Brazil, is part of an extensive strip known as the Orinoco Mining Arc, which the government intends to exploit with multinational companies to compensate for the drop in oil prices.
