The naming of Baku as the capital for Islamic culture for 2009 offers Azerbaijan a great opportunity to show-case its history and create and awareness and appreciation of its contribution to Islamic arts, sciences and culture, Muslim Council of Britain Secretary General Mohammad Abdul Barri told Trend .
Given its strategic geographic location, Azerbaijan will inevitably be called upon a greater role in the Muslim world, Abdul Barri wrote Trend in an email.
A ceremony proclaiming Baku the "Islamic Cultural Capital 2009" took place at the Heydar Aliyev Palace on Feb. 18. The decision was made at the Fifth Islamic Conference of Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) Member States cultural ministers in Tripoli in November 2007.
Al Twaijri, four ministers and deputy ministers of Islamic states and representatives of international organizations and European cultural capitals were attending.
Azerbaijan as well as its sister central Asian republics have a long and distinguished history. Many of the early Islamic scholars in hadith and jurisprudence hail from this region, said Barri.
Over 100 events will be held as part of Baku's celebrating the Islamic Cultural Capital 2009 award.
