UAE extends BlackBerry ban to visitors

The United Arab Emirates has extended its ban on the application of BlackBerry services to foreign visitors, Press TV reported.

The UAE's Telecommunication Regulatory Authority (TRA) made the announcement on Monday.

The TRA said on Sunday that the country's citizens would have to stop using the mobile handset's e-mail, messaging, and internet services as of October 11, the German press agency DPA reported.

The telecom regulatory body stated that the information exiting the gadget could be handled by a foreign entity.

The country's laws do not cover some of the applications BlackBerry provides, "causing judicial, social and national security concerns," the TRA added, according to the Associated Press.

Saudi Arabian, Indian, and Bahraini officials have also taken issue with Blackberry's messaging service.

Last year, 'cyber hackers' cracked into US President Barack Obama's BlackBerry handset, accessing text messages of a 'sensitive' nature.
