Four policemen and a post office employee were killed in a heist in Yemen on Wednesday, police officials said.

The assailants opened fire on a post truck and a police escort on a road connecting the Arabian Sea port of al-Sheher and the al-Hami district of Hadhramout - around 900 kilometres east of the capital Sana'a - and took off with 10 million riyals (46,700 dollars).

An unspecified number of attackers were injured in an exchange of fire with the police but still managed to flee the scene with the cash.

The post truck was carrying cash destined to pay for the salaries of civil servants in al-Hami, dpa reported.
