Human rights group Amnesty International on Thursday urged the Egyptian military, now in charge of the country, to stop the use of torture against detainees, dpa reported.

"The military authorities must intervene to end torture and other abuse of detainees, which we now know to have been taking place in military custody," Amnesty International said in a statement.

The pressure group said former detainees had told it of the tortures, including by means of whipping and electric shocks, during the nationwide protests that led to the resignation of former president Hosny Mubarak.

One 29-year old, whose name was being withheld to protect his security, told Amnesty he was recently beaten over the head with a chair by a soldier, leaving him unconscious, and later subjected to electric shocks and threatened with rape until his release, seven days later.

The military has vowed to protect Egyptian citizens and not to use force against civilians.
