Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa on Monday called for an end to violence and bloodshed in Libya, describing the people's demands for change as legitimate, dpa reported.

"The demands of the Arab peoples for reform, development and change are legitimate," said Moussa in a statement.

Protests continued Monday in the North African country, after violent clashes left hundreds of people dead.

The New York-based Human Rights Watch said that death toll from protests in five Libyan cities to 233 since February 17, however witnesses said the number was much more than this.

"Sons of the Arab world speak the same language. It is logical they would be inspired by each other's experiences," added Moussa.

Libyan protesters have been calling for the ouster of Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi, who has been in power for 41 years, following successful revolutions in Tunisia and Egypt.
