UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon telephoned Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi on Monday and urged him to immediately halt all violence against pro-democracy protesters, dpa reported.
"The secretary general expressed deep concern at the escalating scale of violence and emphasized that it must stop immediately," the UN said. "He reiterated his call for respect for basic freedoms and human rights, including peaceful assembly and information."
In the "intensive" phone call, Ban called on Libyan authorities to engage in "broad-based dialogue to address the legitimate concerns of the population," the UN said.
