Arab World Materials 13 March 2011 00:35 (UTC +04:00)

A cameraman for the regional Arab network Al Jazeera was killed in Libya on Saturday, the broadcaster reported.

Ali Hassan al-Jaber died in an ambush in the Hawari area, near the rebel-held eastern city of Benghazi, dpa reported.

Al-Jaber, whose nationality was not disclosed, is the first member of the media known to be killed in Libya since violence broke out in the country almost a month ago.

It is often unclear who is in control of territory in the eastern part of Libya, where rebels and government forces have been battling for supremacy.

The country has been in turmoil since government forces violently cracked down on protesters demanding the ouster of Libyan leader Moamer Gaddafi, who has been in power for 42 years.
