Denmark supports a wider scope for a UN Security Council resolution on Libya to protect civilians there, Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said Thursday, dpa reported.

"As things stand, a no-fly zone will not be sufficient to prevent (Moamer) Gaddafi's assaults on the opposition," Rasmussen was quoted as telling Danish news agency Ritzau.

Measures could include so-called precision strikes to halt Gaddafi forces from continuing its offensive on the rebel-held city of Benghazi in northeastern Libya.

The 15-member UN Security Council is debating a resolution that would authorize a no-fly zone over Libya to protect civilians in rebel-held areas.

A wider mandate has also been mentioned by the United States. Susan Rice, US ambassador to the United Nations, earlier said a no- fly zone has "inherent limitations in terms of the protection of civilians at immediate risk."
