Iraqis protest demanding better services, release of prisoners

Arab World Materials 25 March 2011 15:53 (UTC +04:00)

Hundreds of protesters gathered in central Baghdad amid tight security on Friday to demand better public services and the release of prisoners held in jail without trial, dpa reported.

Many of those detained are either political prisoners or were arrested following major attacks on the country after the 2003 US-led invasion.

Protesters also chanted slogans urging the government to put an end to corruption and improve services in the country.

Under heavy rain, demonstrators defied tight security measures imposed by police in the Iraqi capital.

Similar protests have taken place across Iraq in recent weeks.

Some of those protests have turned violent, with more than 18 people killed and 140 injured in clashes on Iraq's so-called "Day of Rage," on February 25.
