Attempt to blow up Egypt's gas pipeline to Israel, Jordan fails

Arab World Materials 27 March 2011 19:40 (UTC +04:00)

An attempt to blow up Egypt's pipeline pumping gas to Israel and Jordan failed after the planted bombs did not explode, an Egyptian security official said Sunday, dpa reported.

Forces imposed tight security around Sinai peninsula-based pumping station, the source added.

The attempt comes less than two months after an explosion at the station disrupted supplies of natural gas to Israel and Jordan.

Egypt has been exporting gas to Israel since 2008 under a 15-year deal. The agreement, which sees Israel receive the supplies under preferential terms, has been sharply criticized by many in Egypt.

Opposition groups filed lawsuits against the government for selling the gas to Israel below market rates.

Minister of Oil Abdallah Ghorab said last week that negotiations with Israel were underway to modify the existing gas exports agreements.
