Arab World Materials 17 May 2011 11:12 (UTC +04:00)

NATO fighter jets struck the Libyan capital Tripoli early Tuesday, reports said.

The attacks appeared to target a police station and the home of an anti-corruption official, a spokesman for the regime was quoted by broadcaster Al Jazeera as saying.

Pictures on Libyan television showed heavily damaged and burning buildings in a residential area of Tripoli, DPA reported.

Representatives of Moamer Gaddafi's regime were due to meet with Russian government officials on Tuesday, Moscow said, amid speculation that Russia could be asked to mediate in the civil war.

A previously arranged meeting with the Libyan rebel forces in the Russian capital has been cancelled, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was quoted as saying Monday night.
