About 1,000 Jewish worshipper entered a Palestinian-controlled area to pray and local Palestinian residents said security measures that accompanied the ceremony were "provocative."

The Israeli army shut roads leading to Nablus city and deployed dozens of checkpoints to allow Jews to visit Joseph's Tomb, a Jewish holy site in the city, to mark the anniversary of biblical Joseph's death, said Ghassan Daghlas, a Palestinian official in the city, Xinhua reported.

Palestinian youths clashed with the Israeli settlers and the army, Daghlas said, adding that the army used tear gas and robber bullets to disperse the Palestinian demonstrators.

In April, an Israeli worshipper was shot dead when a group of Jews entered the city without security liaison with Palestinian security forces.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army arrested eight Palestinians during raids in different parts of the West Bank, Israel Radio said, adding the detainees were wanted.
